Description

Kerouac to Cassady, care of Kesey: "Provoking literature is the least of my worries"

TLS signed “Jack,” one page, 8.5 x 11, December 4, 1965. Letter to famed Beat Generation figure Neal Cassady, in full: "Provoking literature is the least of my worries but make the letters just yours and mine and no one's else. Carraway Seed." He adds a handwritten postscript, "xxx to Carolyn." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Kerouac's hand to "Mr. Neal Cassady, 18234 Bancroft Ave, Monte Sereno, California, Los Gatos," most of which has been crossed out and redirected by a postal worker to "c/o Ken Kesey, Star Route #1, La Honda."

A close friend of Kerouac, Cassady prominently featured as himself in the original 'scroll' version of On the Road and served as the inspiration for the character Dean Moriarty in the published version. He also served as the basis for the character Cody Pomeray, who appears in several of Kerouac's later books. The unusual closing of this letter, "Carraway Seed," was a nickname some of Kerouac's friends used for him. A fabulous letter connecting three of the greatest personalities of the Beat Generation.
