Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 16.5 x 10.5, March 18, 1873. President Grant appoints James D. Howell as "Deputy Postmaster at Fair Haven, in the State of Connecticut." Boldly signed at the conclusion by Grant and countersigned by Secretary of State Hamilton Fish. The crisp white seal affixed to the lower left is worn but intact. In very good condition, with light wrinkling, many intersecting folds, and one small area of paper loss.
