Description

Financier and philanthropist (1855-1937) who helped found the Gulf Oil Corporation; he also served as treasury secretary under Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. TLS signed “A. W. Mellon,” one page, 8.25 x 10.75, November 6, 1935. Letter to Ralph T. Hale, in full: "I have your letter of October 24 with reference to the revised edition of Mr. Philip L. Hale's book on Jan Vermeer of Delft, which is soon to be published, containing reproductions of the three paintings by Vermeer now in the Collection assembled by me. These pictures, known as 'The Girl with the Red Hat,' 'The Smiling Girl' and 'The Lace Maker' are in Washington and should be listed as 'From the Collection of The A. W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust.'" Affixed to a slightly larger sheet. In fine condition, with light show-through from old mounting remnants on the reverse.
