Description

A week into his presidency, Johnson appoints a brigadier general

Civil War-dated partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 15.75 x 19.75, April 22, 1865. President Johnson appoints Charles C. Doolittle as "Brigadier General of Volunteers in the service of the United States." Signed at the conclusion by Johnson, and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. Light blue War Office seal remains affixed to upper left. In fine condition, with light toning to the edges. President Abraham Lincoln nominated Doolittle for the appointment on January 30, 1865, with the US Senate confirming the nomination on February 14, 1865. A fascinating document signed early into Johnson's presidency; Lincoln had been assassinated only a week earlier.
