Description

Military appointment by the commander-in-chief and the future Confederate president

Partly-printed vellum DS, signed “Franklin Pierce" as president and "Jeffer. Davis" as secretary of war, one page, 13.75 x 17.25, February 9, 1854. President Pierce appoints William K. Van Bokkelen as "Assistant Quartermaster with the rank of Captain in the service of the United States." Nicely signed at the conclusion by both Pierce and Davis. White paper seal affixed to upper left remains intact. In fine condition, with light wrinkling and soiling. An exceptionally desirable combination of signatures on a single document, with both being choice, crisp examples.
