Description

Balthus recounts his "strange and rather painful experience"

Important Polish-French modern artist (1908-2001) perhaps best known for his resistance against building a biographical profile. Rare ALS signed “Balthus K. de Rola,” one page, 8.25 x 11, November 24. In part: "When your request arrived last December I just happened to have a serious accident, had to undergo an operation, and nearly died. For several months I was cut from the world, without any means of communicating with the outside. A strange and rather painful experience. But since a few weeks I am returning to life and am slowly returning to my work. All this is to explain this long delay, which I hope you will understand." In fine condition.
