Description

On the eve of the Civil War

ALS, one page, 5 x 8, April 8, 1861. Letter to H. E. Hayden. In full: “Mr. Hayden will please accept this as my autograph. I send him also a paper containing my speech in the Convention now sitting here, on ‘the Peace Conference.’” In fine condition, with mounting remnants along the top back edge. Tyler had emerged from retirement to participate in the Virginia Peace Conference, which sought a peaceful resolution to the tense relations between the states with a view to avoiding civil war. He disagreed with the resolutions drawn up and spoke out against the Convention, ultimately voting for secession. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
