Aucoin, in part: “Now in the matter of autographs: I am going to carry out your request, but with difficulty. Just before receiving your letter, I surprised my daughter by being able to write three notes on the fourth line of a sheet of manuscript paper, but I am afraid that my hand will have to be guided in your case. I can see the letters I write when signing a check, but after the check is signed, I do not see so well, or if I look at it awhile it blurs. So, if this autograph is not up to the standard, kindly let your friends know that my sight is almost gone. I am doing a lot of work however, and am dependent on proof readers, secretaries, copyists, or arrangers to carry ou[t] my musical idea for me, but I am thankful to be able to keep my mind occupied and my body active; at least there is nothing wrong with my heart and ears.” In fine condition.
