Due to the risk of a rubella scare, Mattingly was grounded by the flight surgeon and replaced by backup CMP Jack Swigert only three days before the launch. A vibrant image of the original crew that’s enhanced by the presence of Mattingly, an astronaut who would fly to the moon two years later aboard Apollo 16’s Casper.
