Description

Mamie Eisenhower

TLS signed “Love, Mamie Eisenhower,” one page, 6 x 9.25, White House letterhead, September 28, 1955. Letter to Louise Caffey, in full: “It was so thoughtful of you to write, and your letter meant a great deal to me. I am out here in the hospital where they are not only taking care of Ike, but me, too. Each hour that passes with good news lightens the burden. It was all so sudden and came as such a shock. John and I were permitted to have lunch with Ike today. It is wonderful having John here —he is such a morale booster for Ike, Nana and me. It was good to say ‘hello’ to Frank on the telephone, and I was sorry his time was so short that I did not have a chance to see him.” Mamie makes a single handwritten emendation. In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Despite suffering a massive heart attack four days before this letter was written, Eisenhower showed his mettle and resilience by returning to his post at the White House on November 11, 1955. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
