Description

Lazare Carnot

One of the most important creators of the French Revolutionary Army (1753–1823); he voted for the death of Louis XVI and was appointed by Napoleon to the post of Minister of War. Manuscript LS in French, signed “Carnot,” one page, 7.75 x 12.25, May 11, 1815. Written as Napoleon’s Minister of Interior during the short-lived period called ‘The Hundred Days.’ An interesting letter on the insinuations of “some fanatical priests” and the incompetence of mayors whom Carnot expects have already been dismissed. Vertical and horizontal folds and professionally repaired paper loss to upper right corner, otherwise fine condition. The battle of Waterloo and Napoleon’s fall were to happen in the month following this letter. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
