Description

“Wilson’s speech was just like all of his,” his predecessor complains, “He never answers any argument at all”

TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” three pages, 8.5 x 11 (first page slightly smaller), personal letterhead, March 5, 1919. Letter to newspaper correspondent Gus J. Karger concerning negotiations over the League of Nations. In part: “I determined that I would have some arguments in my speech and would take up the various points so as to help those, who wish to favor the League, to answer its critics. Wilson’s speech was just like all of his, as I knew it would be. He never answers any argument at all. He usually defies his opponent in many different ways, and makes a number of taking apothegms and epigrams, states a few high ideals and lets it go at that…I haven’t read Knox’s speech, but Harry tells me that it is an unworthy speech, that it is pettifogging and altogether lacking in the broad judicial attitude that we have in the past looked for from Knox. They are evidently all nettled at my attitude, but I have gotten over being worried about that.” Taft makes a brief handwritten addition to the text on the second page. In very good condition, with rusty paperclip marks and dampstaining to upper left, and toning to edges. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
