Letter to Lillie Israel, in full: “Accept my thanks for your kind congratulations in your letter of the 18th instant.” In fine condition, with slight scattered soiling and an expected mailing fold passing through the bottom tips of the signature. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Following his decisive win over democratic candidate Winfield Scott Hancock in the 1880 presidential election, Garfield formally took office on March 4, 1881, less than four months after this letter was signed.
