I cannot believe the Hon: House can take any pleasure in seeing the property of any of the Penns wantonly wasted & destroyed, but when it happens to be that of one who has risqued life & fortune freely in the great contest, I am persuaded I may safely rely upon the justice and attention of the Assembly of New Jersey & expect a favorable reception…the Preservation of the Rights of Individuals in perfect Consistency with the Duty owing to the State.” In fine condition, with overall toning. With only their private lands and manors protected, the Penn family lost nearly a quarter-million acres of land held by their proprietorship with the passing of the Divesting Act of 1779.
