Description

George Henry Gordon

American lawyer and Union general (1823–1886) who was one of the founders of the Military Historical Society of Massachusetts. War-dated ALS signed “Geo. H. Gordon,” four pages, on two lightly-lined adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, November 6, 1865. Letter to General Thomas H. Ruger soliciting his help in defense of allegations concerning the Battle of Cedar Mountain, in part: “On that most malicious Banks Lie of my not moving up in time at the Battle of Cedar Mt. testified to by One Clark, that…rascall in Banks staff. I should like your affidavit to use if occasion requires. None knew better than yourself what an unmitigated falsehood that is. It was the result originally of Banks statements determined to find some scape goats upon whom to put his blunders, and was put upon record by Clark because I told him publicly…last year that he was a damned liar for repeating such statements. Please state that your affidavit is in response to my letter informing you that I had heard of testimony totally false and without the slightest shadow of foundation, given by one Col. Clark a sort of appendage to Genl. Banks [saying] to please his master that I did not obey Genl. Banks order to move to the fight as soon as ordered.” In fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
