Description

Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein

Two letters, each one page, addressed to Ralph Whitney of Cosmopolitan Magazine. First, a TLS from Jerome Kern, in part: “I take it that you are not intrigued, as a piece of dramaturgy, by the steamship complication you mention in Mr. Oscar Hammerstein’s libretto of ‘Sweet Adeline,’ and I hesitate to rely upon my memory to set you right. The safest plan is for you to drop a line to Oscar Hammerstein who I am sure will give you the exact quotation from his script.” Second, a TLS from Oscar Hammerstein, in part: “Answering your letter of May 2nd—and it’s about time I did—the reference to the two steamships in ‘Sweet Adeline’ was this: The comedian (Charles Butterworth) was in possession of a message from the young woman of his brother’s dreams (Helen Morgan) announcing that she was leaving Paris on The City Of New York. Butterworth imparted this news to his brother, but he got it twisted. He told his brother, an impulsive fellow, rowed out into the bay and climbed a Jacob’s ladder to board The City Of Paris and sail away for France only to find out that his lady love was crossing him on the ocean on her way to New York, and that his brother was a dunderhead.” In overall fine condition, with intersecting folds to the Hammerstein (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature). Accompanied by the original mailing envelope from Hammerstein. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
