Description

Alexander Archipenko

Ukrainian abstract sculptor (1887–1964) who veered away from the traditional form of neo-classical sculpture to implement the use of negative space to depict the human form, allowing for multiple, simultaneous views of his work. TLS signed “A. Archipenko,” one page, 8.5 x 11, November 19, 1946. Letter subscribing to Art Digest, in part: “I don’t know what a subscription for the Art Digest is, but I am enclosing herewith my check for $5.00 to cover one year’s subscription.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature) and some small edge tears. An interesting artistic association, as Art Digest published material about Archipenko on multiple occasions. An example of praise for his work can be found in the July 1937 issue, in which C. J. Bulliet wrote, ‘Archipenko sought and found new aesthetic laws and stylistic innovations that ever conformed to the universal urge for grace and rhythm.’ Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
