Autograph letter, unsigned, one page both sides, 8 x 10, May 21, 1931. Letter to Dr. Knapp regarding economics during the Great Depression. He begins by pasting a short newspaper column entitled ‘No Depression Here,’ and writing, in part: “1. Compare this—with the performance of the Steel Corporation, the General Electric, and the Radio Corporation. 2. In US Daily, May 20/31, file for well paid comparative statements of cost of living in Mass.—in April 1931 with before the war. Fuel and lighting is still at 166.—Soft coal costs at the pit's worth no more today than it did in 1913.—Coal efficiency is vastly greater.—Let the public utility, power and light companies explain why their product is so high. 3. As bearing on the life insurance costs etc. (over) enclosed memo prepared by Miss Grady will give light.” A block of toning to the center from the affixed newspaper article and various paperclip marks and impressions, otherwise fine condition.
