In part: “I have received your letter of today’s date conveying the proposal on the part of Mr. Franklin Hooper that I should write an article on ‘the Progress of the Arts’ for, as I understand, the Encyclopaedia Britannica…but I am obliged to decline it as I cannot pretend to any understanding of recent developments.” The pages were initially adjoined but have been separated.
