Ship’s papers issued for a successful four-year Indian Ocean whaling voyage

Partial self-contained partly-printed DS as president, one page, 18 x 8, August 11, 1852. Upper portion of four-language ship’s papers issued to “Josiah Hamlin master or commander of the Barque called Catalpa…lying at present in the port of New Bedford bound for Indian Ocean and laden with Provisions Utensils and Stores for a whaling voyage.” Signed at the bottom of the third panel by Fillmore. Double-matted and framed with a portrait of Fillmore to an overall size of 30.25 x 13.75. In fine condition, with expected vertical folds and a few creases, a couple touching the end of signature. Sailing from August of 1852 until August of 1856, the Catalpa brought back 806 barrels of sperm whale oil and 21 barrels of baleen whale oil. Oversized.
