Description

Writing home while sick during college

ALS signed “Boots,” one page, lightly-lined, 8.5 x 11, May 9, 1945. Letter to his parents. In part: “I am beginning to chafe in this sick bay…I’m very hungry, but I am on a liquid diet and am starving to death. I keep thinking of steaks, chicken, and that big mess of those wonderfully flavored brown limas…for dinner here—a cup of tea and a small glass of grapefruit juice. I’m beginning to look like something from Buchenwald!…I’ve got that box of cookies and I have hidden it in a locker near my bed. If they don’t feed me, I’ll eat cookies. They can’t starve me…All I do is listen to the radio. I’m getting sick of hearing the news over and over. I hear they caught Goering. He’ll be very sorry about that I’m sure.” In fine condition, with light toning. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Kuhn’s hand, writing his name, “B. K. Kuhn,” in the return address area. At this time, Kuhn was attending Franklin and Marshall College in the V-12 Navy College Training Program. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
