Partly-printed war-dated DS as president, one page, 15.5 x 19.25, July 7, 1864. President Lincoln appoints Robert S. Lacey an “Assistant Quartermaster of the Volunteers with the rank of Captain.” Signed at the conclusion by Lincoln, and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Double-matted and framed to an overall size of 21.5 x 25. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, scattered light toning and mirroring of text, and a few creases and wrinkles. The blue wafer seal is worn, but intact. Prior to his service as assistant quartermaster, Lacey raised a company of volunteers in Harrison County, Ohio, and served with General Ulysses S. Grant at the Siege of Petersburg in Virginia as a member of the Army of the Potomac. The Civil War veteran, as well as his brother, another Union officer, are both interred at Arlington National Cemetery. Oversized. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
