In part: “I never saw more than two or three good photographs of American elms. The best is a large one of the ‘Johnston Elm’ about three miles from Providence, one of the finest trees as it was when I used to visit it…I have stereographs of the Batan elm before its present condition of decadence and one of the Washington elm, the last a fair specimen of the tree but neither of them equal to the great Johnston elm.” In fine condition.
