Description

Awarding a mathematics instructor an honorary scholarship to Washington University

LS signed “R. E. Lee, Pres. W. C.,” one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 8, June 25, 1868. Letter to Frank A. Waddill, Cheraw, South Carolina. In full, “The Trustees of Washington College at their meeting June 16, 1868, established five ‘Honorary Scholarships’ to be given to Students of Washington College as rewards of high attainments and good conduct. Under this authority you have been selected by the Faculty as the recipient of an ‘Honorary Scholarship’ for the coming session, in the hope that as you have thus far proved worthy of this mark of confidence, you will heretofore adorn the College by your character and attainments.” In very good condition, with scattered toning and foxing, not affecting legibility, and intersecting mailing folds. Two years later, Waddill was hired as an instructor of mathematics at the school, renamed Washington and Lee University. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
