American admiral (1801–1870) who was flag officer of the Navy during the Civil War. ALS signed “D. G. Farragut, Vice Admiral,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, October 24 [no year]. Letter to a gentleman. In full: “I am compelled to be in Washington on the morning of the 1st of Nov.—You will therefore perceive it is out of my power to accept your polite invitation to meet your English friends on the evening of the 31st, which I much regret.” In fine condition, with a uniform shade of light toning to the first page, mailing fold through the paraph below the signature, slight separation to hinge, and mounting remnants to the reverse.
