Union general (1826–1885) hailed at the beginning of the Civil War as the ‘Young Napoleon,’ who was defeated for the presidency in 1864 by Abraham Lincoln. ALS signed “Geo. McClellan,” one page, 6.5 x 7, April 10, 1863. Letter to Doctor Ellis. In full: “I have received your kind note of this morning and am very glad to learn that you are about to publish the result of your observations during the recent campaign of the Army of the Potomac. I am very much obliged to you for the compliment you pay me in desiring to dedicate your work to me. I beg to assure you that it will afford me great pleasure to have you do so. Hoping to have the anticipation of perusing the book at an early day.” Matted and framed with a period etching, brief biography, and typed transcript of the letter to an overall size of 20.5 x 17.5. In very good condition, with intersecting folds with some slight separation, scattered creases, toning, and soiling, a tear to the right edge, paper loss to upper left corner, and two stained spots to the bottom.
