English film producer, cinematographer, and director (1911–2010) best known for Poseidon Adventure. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, April 11, 2003. Letter to an educator. In part: “Thank you all for taking the time to look at my old films. There are good ones and sometimes not such good ones, although one always tries for perfection, it doesn’t always turn out that way. One of my films, not my best, was like ‘Erin Brockovich’ shot out in the Mojave Desert. The whole unit stayed in Barstow for two weeks. We created a splendid sandstorm with enormous fans to give us the wind, it starred Yul Brynner. ‘Poseidon Adventure’ is over thirty years old and is still shown all the time. Yes Miss Winters did do her own underwater swimming and the rest of the cast did everything themselves, they were all great. I am sending with this letter, a signed photograph…I also send very best wishes for their future. Seventy-five years ago, I was a messenger boy in Elstree Studios near London. Today I am a retired director living in Beverly Hills. Something like this can happen to all of you!” Accompanied by a short ANS which reads: “I have never had a business card. Will this do instead. Ronald Neame. For a very special education student.” In fine condition, with a few scattered creases. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
