Description

Having reclaimed his superstar status in 1960, Mantle selects a pinch-hitter to go to bat for him against the IRS

Notarized DS, one page, 8 x 13, August 29, 1960. In part: “I, Mickey Mantle, residing at Dallas, Texas, have made, constituted and appointed and by these presents do make, constitute and appoint Abram Friedman of 635 Madison Avenue, City and State of New York, my true and lawful attorney for me, and in my name, place and stead to represent me in all proceedings before the Internal Revenue Service in connection with my income tax returns for calendar years ended 12/31/1957, 12/31/1958, 12/31/1959, before the informal conferee.” Some light creasing and faint overall toning, otherwise fine condition.

Mantle’s home run blasts and penchant for the Big Apple nightlife…or any nightlife...made him a living legend not only in the Bronx but across the country in the 1950s, winning the Triple Crown in 1956, leading the league in runs and walks with a career-high batting average in 1957, and numerous other baseball accolades through the decade. Perhaps it was the strain of constant perfection...or one night too many carousing with his teammates...that put the Mick into an uncharacteristic slump in 1959. Accepting a $7,000 pay cut following that lackluster reason, 1960 would turn out to be a pretty good one for the Yankee legend, with an American League-leading 40 home runs, just missing out on that season’s MVP award. A unique and rarely seen fiscal document—involving an “informal” meeting with the Internal Revenue Service. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
