Description

‘Gentleman Jim’ welcomes home Admiral Byrd

Menu, 6.5 x 9.5 for the Welcome Home Luncheon honoring Admiral Richard Byrd, given by the Advertising Club of New York on June 19, 1930, on the occasion of his return from the South Pole. Signed on the front cover in black ink, “Jas. J. Corbett,” and also signed, “R. E. Byrd” and “C. E. Rosendahl.” In very good condition, with scattered toning and foxing to covers, lightly affecting Corbett’s signature, some small damp stains, and mild handling wear. The menu retains its red, white, and blue ribbon. The New York Times reported on June 20, 1939, “Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd and a group of his comrades of the Antarctic expedition were honored yesterday at a luncheon given by the Advertising Club of New York…More than 300 members of the club packed the room and cheered when Byrd was lauded, and applauded again and again when he gave the credit for the expedition to his comrades and his backers.” Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
