Description

Shaw writes a thespian: "Take care: it is the statue you will have to play – a much less talky and more amusing part. Can you sing falsetto?"

Nobel Prize–winning Irish dramatist and critic (1856–1950) who takes a place among the most distinguished and influential literary figures of his time. ALS signed “G. Bernard Shaw,” one page, 3.25 x 4.5, Adelphi Terrace letterhead, May 3, 1907. Letter to Sherbrooke. In full: “Take care: it is the statue you will have to play – a much less talky and more amusing part. Can you sing falsetto? Did you ever see Farido play Le Statue du Commandeur?” In very good condition, with central vertical creasing through text and one letter of signature, and a bit of scattered light soiling.

Shaw’s light-hearted missive was written in the wake of two of the author’s most successful plays—Major Barbara (1905), which focused on mankind’s salvation via political activity, and The Doctor's Dilemma (1906), a humorous review of the medical profession. Shaw playful inquires whether the recipient would be interested in portraying ‘Le Statue du Commandeur’—a French expression referring to a widely respected and watchful father-figure. A whimsical piece as the great writer makes a few playful inquiries of an actor. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
