The Good Gray Poet cashes his check for 'Carol of Harvest'

Endorsed bank check, 8 x 2.5, filled out in another hand and signed by W. C. & F. P. Church, payable to Whitman for $60.00, September 6, 1867. Endorsed on the reverse in black ink by Whitman. In very good condition, with several vertical folds, cancellation cut to center, scattered light toning and soiling, feathering to Whitman’s signature, and a revenue stamp affixed to front. In a letter dated the next day [not included] Whitman writes that he has received a sixty dollars for the publication of his ‘Carol of Harvest’ in the Galaxy. He also offers two other works to the publication, one called ‘Ethiopia Commenting.’ It was at this time things were picking up for Whitman, as evidenced by this payment.
