AQS on an off-white 5.75 x 4.5 sheet, Longfellow writes out his brief poem ‘Excelsior.’ In full: 'The shades of night were falling fast, As through an Alpine village passed, A youth, who bore, 'mid snow and ice, A banner with the strange device, Excelsior!' Signed at the conclusion, 'Henry W. Longfellow, September 1852.' In very good condition, with intersecting folds, a couple of tears below signature, scattered toning, and a heavier stock sheet affixed to half of the reverse.
