Description

"If he takes morphine or any such thing I don't suppose he would confide in me"

American artist (1861–1909) best known for his paintings and sculptures of the American West, and for his depictions of cowboy life in particular. ALS, two pages, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, December 20. Letter to 'my dear Gunnison.' In full: 'My interview with Charlie was rather short and I am afraid I did most of the talking. I charged him with his sins and did not give him a chance to deny. My purpose was to make him ‘sit up.’ If he takes morphine or any such thing I don’t suppose he would confide in me - so that I can not find out. Of course his illness has had a very depressing effect on him. It takes a pretty stubby sort of a fellow to go through his vicissitudes and not lay down. I hope he will do well with another chance.' In fine condition, with three thin areas of paper from light mounting remnants to reverse of second page.

Herbert Foster Gunnison, to whom this letter was addressed, was a lifelong family friend of Remington who purchased several of his early sculptures. Gunnison was also a writer for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, a publication of note for socially prominent Brooklynites in the late 1800's. This unique correspondence notes the great artist’s disdain with drug addiction—in this instance the rising popularity of morphine abuse. 'I charged him with his sins and did not give him a chance to deny,' Remington sternly tells his friend in this correspondence. Strong words indeed. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
