Legendary boxer (1863–1917) who was the sport’s first three-division world champion, winning the middleweight title in 1891, the heavyweight title in 1897, and the light-heavyweight title in 1903. Scarce vintage ink signature, 'Atlantic City, Aug 24/99, Robert Fitzsimmons, Carson City, March 17/97,' on an off-white 3 x 1.5 black-bordered card. In fine condition, with a couple brushes to first date, mounting remnants to reverse, and some scattered light soiling. On March 17, 1897, Fitzsimmons knocked out Jim Corbett to retain the World Heavyweight title in round 14. This constituted a remarkable achievement, as Jim Corbett, a skilled boxer, weighed considerably more than Fitzsimmons. He out-boxed Fitzsimmons for several rounds, knocked him down in the sixth round, and badly damaged his face with his jab, left hook and right hand, but Fitzsimmons kept coming and Corbett began to tire. In the 14th round, Fitzsimmons won the title with his ‘solar plexus’ punch. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
