DS, signed 'Primo Carnera,' one page both sides, 8.5 x 13, January 3, 1957. Application form for the California State Athletic Commission for Carnera’s wrestling license, filled out in another hand, with the reverse bearing his immense left and right thumb prints along with a smudged example. Punch and staple holes to top edge, several notations and stamps, light creasing and wrinkling, and show-through from his frighteningly large fingerprint on the reverse, otherwise fine condition.
In 1957, the year of this application, Carnera beat King Kong to claim wrestling's world heavyweight championship and become the first—and thus far only man—to win both boxing's and wrestling's world heavyweight titles. Carnera, who stood 6-foot-5 and weighed 265 pounds, had hands that one observer, upon meeting the legend, said were like trying to hold a ham. His unforgettable grasp enveloped a man’s hand in the same manner that a ‘normal’ adult would hold an infant’s hand. A hint of those physical attributes are well pronounced via the rolled prints on this document from Carnera’s championship year. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
