ALS, one onionskin page, 6.25 x 10, July 23. Letter, written while on a fishing trip in Colorado, responding to a request from professor Edward Olsen. In full: “In returning your card I apologize for the appearance of my signature. In the fishing camp where I’m spending my few days of vacation, the only pen I have is a bit on the balky side! Anyway, sir I’m flattered that you should consider an excerpt from a talk of mine to be worthy of preservation.” In fine condition. Accompanied by a carbon of the professor’s letter to Eisenhower, dated July 20, 1952, requesting the autograph, and a copy of a 1991 letter from Olsen stating “Shortly after he was nominated for the Presidency the press reported that he had gone to Colorado to a small village there. I wrote to him and almost immediately he replied.”
Having defeated GOP challenger and Ohio senator Robert Taft for the Republican Party nomination, Ike temporarily retreated to the quiet of Colorado for a little rest and relaxation. Pledging during the campaign to combat Communism and to personally ‘go to Korea’ to end the conflict there, Eisenhower gained a strong following of those who liked Ike, including Professor Olsen.
