Partially printed souvenir sheet presented to Academy Award–winning director Norman Taurog, one page both sides, 9 x 12.25, signed by 27 cast and crew members from Taurog’s 1948 film Words and Music, a musical biography of the famous songwriting team of Rodgers and Hart. The signers range from the film’s stars to the hairdresser and script girl. Among the more prominent personalities: Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney (“Love ya!”), Betty Garrett, Mel Tormé, Jeanette Nolan McIntryre, Ann Sothern, Tom Drake, Marshall Thompson, Perry Como, Janet Leigh, Clinton Sundberg, producer Arthur Freed, and multiple-Oscar-winning cinematographer Charles Rosher. In fine condition, with a hint of mild edge toning and soiling, and old tape stains to blank left margin.
Words and Music holds multiple distinctions, among them an exquisite display of tunes by Rodgers and Hart and, sadly, what was to be the final screen pairing between Garland and Rooney. Taurog—the famed director and original recipient of this piece—already had created a number of musical and comedy hits (despite weak material), qualities that later came in handy as Elvis Presley’s film director.
