Large and attractive approximately 10.5 x 28 schematic of the Lunar Rover Vehicle’s electrical battery systems, used to power the wheel motors. The page is entitled “Sensors, Displays, and Switching” at the lower right corner with a typed filing tag reading “Sensors Displays.” Signed on the far left panel, “Flown to the Lunar Surface in the Valley of Taurus-Littrow. December 1972. Gene Cernan, Apollo XVII CDR.” In fine condition, with three punch holes to left edge and four vertical filing folds. Accompanied by a signed illustrated letter of provenance from Cernan bearing photographs of the astronaut holding the complete checklist, signing the page, and holding this particular page. The letter reads, “I certify that this schematic drawing from Apollo 17 was flown to the surface of the moon aboard the Lunar Module Challenger, when we landed in the valley of Taurus-Littrow on December 11, 1972, the last lunar landing of Apollo. It was part of the LM Systems Data manual we carried along for troubleshooting and reference for the many electrical and mechanical systems that made up our lunar landing spacecraft, spacesuits and Lunar Roving Vehicle. The LM Systems Data manual is made up of 38 of these detailed schematic drawings, all index tabbed by subject and accordion-folded to fit into the manual, which is a simple three ringed, loose-leaf booklet. The manual laws manifest as part #SKB32100127-385 and serial #1001. This is the Lunar Rover sensor and display schematic. It shows the electrical flow from the batteries to each of the four wheel motors, with meters and switches in-between, monitoring amps and volts, temperatures, and general condition and remaining potentials of the drive system of the rover.” Signed in black felt tip, “Gene Cernan, Apollo XVII CDR.” Lunar surface items are very rare, but even more so are surface items associated with the legendary Lunar Rover Vehicle—the ‘space buggy’ that astronauts drove on the moon during Apollo 15, Apollo 16, and Apollo 17.
