Signed book: Enola Gay. NY: Stein and Day, 1977. Hardcover with dustjacket, 6.5 x 9.25, 327 pages. Signed in blue ballpoint on the opening pages by crew members Dutch Van Kirk and Morris Jeppson, both adding their own personal commentary on their roles in ending World War II.
Van Kirk writes, in part: “After 60 years most people do not recall why we dropped the atomic bombs, remembering only the large casualties…Our education system is a contribution to this lack of knowledge…There is no morality in any type of war, and in modern warfare, innocents as well as military get killed. As Gen. Wm. Sherman once said, and many agree, War is Hell.”
Jeppson writes, in part: “How close the World came to domination by Japan and Germany. The atomic bomb did end WWII to then enable the United States to put Germany and Japan back on their feet to evolve as good democratic countries.”
In fine condition, with library stamps and cards to opening and closing pages, as well as fore-edges and spine, and scattered wear and tears to dustjacket. Sadly, Jeppson died in March of this year and according to the consignor, Van Kirk, 89, no longer signs with these long messages. A rare look into the thoughts of two of the crew members who had a direct hand in ending the second World War. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
