Description

An uncommonly excellent portrait of the world-changing inventor

American artist and inventor (1791–1872) whose development of the telegraph revolutionized communication—and indeed, society as a whole—and represented a crucial step toward such later innovations as the telephone. Fantastic original vintage 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite seated portrait by Hanns Hanfstaengl of Dresden (and so stamped on the reverse), signed in the lower border in black ink, “With the respects of Saml. F. B. Morse.” Ink notation on reverse indicates, “January 1868.” An outstanding example in fine condition. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
