LS signed “A. Lincoln,” one page, 5.25 x 7.5, January 4, 1861. Brief letter to F. F. Rockwell complying with an autograph request. In full: “Herewith I send you my autograph which you request.” Tape repair on reverse of a partial horizontal mailing fold separation, mild toning and show-through to corners and edges from mounting remnants on reverse, and a couple other small spots of light toning, none affecting text or signature, otherwise condition is fine.
The sixteenth president had a reputation for being quite amicable to autograph requests, and this example, with the introductory text said to be written by Lincoln’s personal secretary John George Nicolay, being no exception. Interestingly, on the date in question, Lincoln also met with Salmon P. Chase, a newly elected US Senator and former Ohio governor, undoubtedly to discuss Chase’s appointment as Secretary of the Treasury. An always desirable Lincoln signature with a direct “autograph collector” slant. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
