Confederate general (1817-1872). He achieved fame as a senior commander under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee and fought effectively through much of the war, but his legacy has been clouded by controversies over his actions at the Battle of Gettysburg. Ink signature, “Rich S Ewell 1st Lt 1 drag,” on an off-white 5.75 x 2 slip. Signature is affixed by its left edge to a 7.5 x 4.5 sheet above a collector’s short manuscript biography.
