Description

Sherman corrects a military misconception

LS signed “W. T. Sherman,” one page, 8 x 10, February 17, 1888. Letter to editor F. N. Barrett of American Grocer to inform Barrett that, though grateful for his suggestions as to Sherman’s recollection, the editor was in fact wrong. In part: “I thank you for the very flattering criticism of my late article in the Century Magazine. The impressions you formed relative to the battle of Franklin are not in the main correct. General J. D. Cox commanded the 23d Corps, General Stanley the 4th Corps, and General Schofield, the whole. It is therefore unsafe to say who did the chief fighting when all did so well. Of course it is conceded by all that General Cox performed his share and performed it well, but equal praise must be given to the others who shared in the fruitful combat.” Intersecting mailing folds, one through a single letter of the signature, and a few wrinkles, otherwise fine, bright condition.

Century Magazine ran weekly serials transmitted by soldiers who participated in the Civil War. Famous commanders, such as Sherman, received large sums of money for their anecdotes, yet many of the stories were inaccurate and required a bit of editorial adjustment. Of course, the successful former Union Army general was hardly one to entertain any such interference with what he perceived to be accurate accounts, even more than 20 years after the fact, thus prompting this terse reply.
