Description

The first man on the moon again shuns the public spotlight: “I would not be interested in appearing on this program”

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, University of Cincinnati letterhead, May 4, 1979. Letter to television producer Steve Forrest in which Armstrong declines an invitation to appear for an interview for the 10th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. In full: “Thank you for your inquiry regarding my possible participation in your ‘Evening’ production. After reviewing the information provided, I have concluded that I would not be interested in appearing on this program. Thank you for the courtesy of your request.” According to Forrest (his on-air name), he was working as a reporter in Dayton, Ohio, who was trying to arrange an interview for the 10th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, and kept this letter in his possession since then. Armstrong joined the faculty of the University of Cincinnati in 1971, as a member of the Department of Aerospace Engineering. He decided on Cincinnati over other universities, including his alma mater, Purdue, because it had a small Aerospace department; he hoped that the faculty members would not be annoyed that he came straight into a professorship with only the USC master's degree. The official job title he received at Cincinnati was University Professor of Aerospace Engineering. After teaching for eight years, he resigned in 1979 due to other commitments and changes in the university structure from independent municipal school to state-school. In fine condition, with small tear to top left corner, tape remnant along top edge, and a bit of mild toning to left side. Pre-certified Scott Cornish and RRAuction COA.
