Vintage matte-finish 10 x 8 photo of the Mercury 7 astronauts with a model of a rocket, signed in various inks by Alan B. Shepard, Jr., Walter M. Schirra, Jr., John H. Glenn, Jr., Virgil I. Grissom, M. Scott Carpenter, Donald K. Slayton, and Leroy S. Cooper, Jr. An inscription has been added to the top right of the image, probably in Grissom’s hand, and reads, “Best wishes to Scotty’s good friend Peter Nestor, from the Mercury Astronauts.” Accompanied by a 2009 letter of provenance from the wife of the original recipient stating, “This signed photo of the Mercury Seven astronauts was given to my late husband, Peter Nestor, in the early 1960s by Gus Grissom. Grissom’s son, Scotty, was one of Peter’s childhood friends. Peter’s father, James Nestor was an engineer for NASA.” Slight brush to Carpenter’s signature, some light contrast to the light, but completely legible inscription, and a few light creases to bottom border, otherwise fine condition.
