“I’m off tomorrow for Houston” McAuliffe sends thanks for a good luck bracelet before leaving for training

New Hampshire schoolteacher (1948–1986) who was the first teacher in space; she perished, along with all six other crew members, during the Challenger disaster on January 28, 1986. ALS signed “Christa,” one page, 6 x 8.5, September 7. Letter to her colleague at Concord High School. In full: “Please convey my thanks to the C.E.A. for the lovely gold bracelet. I have been wearing it during my past few days of interviews and so many people have complimented me on my selection of jewelry! I feel very strongly about remaining an active member this year, even though I will not be in the classroom. It’s so important that teachers unify and draw from each others strengths. Thanks again—I’m off tomorrow for Houston.” Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the letter’s recipient, Don LeBrun, who was a friend and colleague of McAuliffe’s at Concord High School in New Hampshire. Letter reads, in part, “I was a colleague of Christa’s during her entire stay at Concord High. I was in Washington, D.C., when she was named a finalist…and represented the school at a presentation in early September when the Concord teachers presented her a gold bracelet for good luck. The note was a thank you before she left for training in September 85.” In very fine condition. Pre-certified Scott Cornish and RRAuction COA.
