Description

Rare and early Harrison Indiana Territory court appointment

Rare and unusual partly-printed DS, signed as the first governor of the Indiana Territory, “Willm. Henry Harrison,” one page, 12.5 x 8, June 21, 1810. Governor Harrison appoints Daniel McClure Esq. to the position of “a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas,” boldly signed at the conclusion in black ink by Harrison, and countersigned by the governor’s secretary. On the reverse, Harrison has added a lengthy handwritten endorsement reading “Before me William Henry Harrison Governor of the Indiana Territory personally appeared on the 21st of June 1810 Daniel McClure the within named to whom was nominated as well the oath of office prescribed by law as that to support the Constitution of the United States. Willm. Henry Harrison.” As governor, Harrison had wide ranging powers in the new territory, including the authority to appoint all territory officials and the territorial legislature and control over the division of the territory into districts. In very good condition, with some small areas of paper loss along intersecting folds, scattered light toning and foxing, with a heavier strip to left edge, including a circular area over portion of signature from seal, and some scattered light creasing and wrinkling. A nicely signed and scarce format. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
