Description

Twice mentioning her famous sibling Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh’s sister. ALS in Dutch, signed “Mme. E. H. du Quesne Van Gogh,” one page, lightly-lined both sides, 8 x 10, October 21, 1929. Letter to a friend, mentioning her brother, Vincent, in the opening lines, as well as the conclusion. In full: “Further to your pleasant and interesting visit the other day, I would like to come back to several points of our conversation. The painter whose bronze statue is located in Anvers is Daubigny; he excels in landscapes done vertically, beaches and heaths and shorelines, with beautifully selected skies; one of the streets in Anvers is named after him. If you want to meet a fond friend of Vincent’s, I give you the name of Master of Laws Hub. Nauta of No. 9 Piet Heinkade [Quay] in Amsterdam, who has recently become engaged to Miss Ada Hardijk of No. 41 Prins-Mauritsstr. [Street] in ‘s Hager. Master Nauta knows Nuenen [town in Belgium] from his boyhood years, and therefore knows a lot about Vincent. He corresponded with me and visited me before going to Indonesia for a year to write a dissertation and to visit his parents. He is, I believe, of your religious principles, although not Catholic. He will do all he can to support your plan. Just go ahead and mention my name. In the course of our conversation you said, “That is how a traveling salesman would give initiative”. However, please permit me to observe that the great Vondel, prince of poets, was a merchant in stockings. You are zealously devoted to art, love art and your religion, which from of old has always been supported by art, and which therefore possesses a deeply-rooted attraction for me. Finally, I wish to give you two addresses of my daughters and sons-in-law. In case the Day of Tribute should bepostponed much longer, through no fault of its devotees, and I should not live to experience that day, you shall obligate me to give notice of this important happening to *Mr. and Mrs. Riem Vis nee du Quesne of No. 110 Capelweg in Amersfoort, and to the Hon. Mayor and Mrs. J. Kooiman nee du Quesne; the latter - my oldest daughter - have named their little son after his great Great-Uncle Vincent. They live at: ‘Westerbeek’ in Frederiksoord. I am planning to go to Amsterdam this coming Wednesday, in order to visit the exhibition on Thursday; that one night I will stay with family in Zaandam, and so I will return to Baarn on Thursday. Traveling is not my forte, so I hope I will do alright.” Bisecting mailing folds, scattered foxing, and a few creases and edge dings, otherwise fine condition. RRAuction COA.
