Presented here is an original, 2.5 x 4.25 carte-de-visite photograph of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), one of the nation’s finest educators and poets. The photo was taken by the Boston-based Black Studio (a noted pioneer of photography), whose images were often used as a basis for Longfellow’s portrait engravings. The native New Englander signed the piece, “Henry W. Longfellow 1872,” which displays nicely against its sepia-toned medium despite some light skipping of ink to the middle initial and the beginning of the last name. Mounting remnants are seen along the bottom edge and both top corners, yet the relic demonstrates fine condition. While Longfellow is not a particularly uncommon autograph, signed photographs are few and far between. RRAuction COA.
