Description

Higher tax bracket? As an “ennobled,” Voltaire awaits an impending tax increase

ALS in French, signed “Voltaire,” one page, 6 x 7.5, April 15. Matted and framed to an overall size of 11.5 x 17, this 6 x 7.5 letter was signed by the great François-Marie Arouet Voltaire (1694-1778). Written at Les Delices circa 1755-59, the famed philosopher/author discusses an impending tax increase, and writes in full: “You had requested papers concerning the Gex region while I was traveling. I have the honor to send you what I have found out about it. I don’t believe the tax on the ennobled will happen this year, but it seems as though the controller general has this course at heart. I will await your orders to push or defer the matter with which you have entrusted me. Count on unchanging affection on my part.” In fine condition with light intersecting folds, a mild diagonal crease runs through the middle portion of the signature, yet Voltaire’s cursive hand is exquisite. Also featured in the framed arrangement is a translation of the text. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
